Interview: Jay Pooley

Back in 2016, SHIFT had the opportunity to interview Jay Pooley and discuss topics on Architecture and Design.

“Architecture is about being optimistic enough about the world around us to build beautiful things”

Jay Pooley is an award-winning designer, an art director, a journeyman carpenter, and a studio instructor and lecturer at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.

He brings his method of critical regionalism along with his experience in scenography mixed with architecture to Daniels students at UofT. He graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor in Environmental Design Studies and a Master in Architecture. Prior to starting up his private practice, he has worked with some of the most influential architects in the field including Brian MacKay-Lyons, Barton Myers, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien.

Some of his works include SickKids VS: Undeniable campaign, Volvo XC40 commercial, and Team Canada: Be Olympic 2018 advertisements.

In 2018, Jay shared his creative work and techniques on stage during TEDxUofT: Deconstruct conference. The talk advocates the urgency and the importance of physical object-making during the age of advance computational tools and representation.
